East Of England Championship Show - 8th July 2017
Spanish Water Dog

I always enjoy judging the SWD and today was no exception. Still new to this country and that shows in the difference in type and size of the exhibits but I have to say that the overall construction was good and my critiques below do not mention eyes, ears and mouths as I found them all to be good. The blacks having a nice dark eye and the browns with hazel.

One thing though is that the standard call for overall proportions of 9:8 which makes for a very square looking dog and many of the exhibits are nearer 10:8 at the moment.
Another positive is that 3 of my top winners were all youngsters which bodes well for the breed

Puppy Dog (1,0a)

1st  Ladlow’s Josalyn Roldan El Mago.

Very promising 10mth Brown & White. Well put together with a well-proportioned head. Clean neck into correctly angled front. Forelegs straight, with good bone. Moderate rear angles.  Lovely mover, true, straight with good drive.

Junior Dog (2,0a)

1st. Spencer’s Valentisimo's Vasco Balboa. 16mth Brown dog looking a picture today carrying a good coat beginning to cord.  Lovely head proportions, short strong neck flows into a super front with well laid shoulders and good return of upper arm giving good fore chest. This with his correct depth of brisket gives him the required heart and lung room. Lovely level top line, well-muscled loin to a moderately angled rear and correctly set and carried tail.  A lovely mover. So straight and true with powerful drive. Stood out for Best Dog and kept taking my eye in the challenge to win BOB

2nd Ladlow’s Josalyn Roldan El Mago.

Post Graduate
Dog (1,0a)

1st Egginton’s Valentisimo's Yogi.

2yr Brown & white. Another typey, well made dog. Pleasing head, good neck into a well laid shoulder but lacks the return of upper arm. Good depth of rib. Level top line and deep through loin. One of the best on the day for correct body proportions with a very level top line and a correctly set and carried natural bob.  On the move he is good in front but today he was a little close behind and had a tendency to overreach

Limit Dog (2,1a)

1st Hodgkinson-Rutherford & Rutherford’s Otto De Aronagua Del Chanderhill Swiss/Ir/Be Jch (Imp Esp).

20mth brown & white.  Pleasing head of good proportions. A little short on leg for me. Good depth of chest. Moved with good reach and drive although a little wide coming on

Open Dog (2,0a)

1st Egginton’s Valentisimo's Tender Teddy.

4yr brown & white dog at the bottom end of the height chart but of good proportions and carrying a nice coat today. Nice head of correct proportions, short strong neck to a well-made front with good depth to brisket and nice fore chest. Lovely level top line and correctly set tail. Super mover, true fore and aft with correct brisk movement and showing good reach and drive. RBD

2nd Long’s Newmoorhill's Juanpablo ShCM.

2yr White boy. Larger built that 1 but still balanced and of good pody proportions. Pleasing head and nice short neck. Straight front with good angles. Deep chest and loin.  Drops off a little over croup.  Moves true coming and going and with Reach and drive in profile although a little lethargic today

Special Beginners Dog (1,0a)

1st  Ladlow’s Josalyn Roldan El Mago.

Puppy Bitch (2,0a)
Two very nice puppies

1st Palumbo’s Rainethyme Memory Keeper. WOW, what a super youngster. 9mths and full of promise. Lovely well-proportioned feminine head on a short neck set into well laid shoulders & straight front. Level top line and deep chest. Correct moderate rear and such a true mover.  Carrying a nice coat today and looking a picture both on the stand and on the move. Another one with a bright future ahead of her. RBB & BP today but it won’t be long before she is taking top honours.  Thrilled to see she went on to win Puppy Group 3.  Congratulations.

2nd Hodgkinson-Rutherford & Rutherford’s Chanderhill Hecho En Espana.  Another promising youngster in her last puppy class. Very similar to the winner in many respects, perhaps a tad longer through the body but I’m sure she will have her times in the top spot

Junior Bitch (2,0a)

1st Egginton’s Valentisimo's Brianna.

What a super young lady. Correct outline size and shape. Lovely head and neck into well laid shoulders with good return of upper arm. Deep chest and level top line to a correctly angulated, well-muscled rear. Tail carriage could be better.  So straight on the move coming and going with excellent reach and drive and that correct brisk movement. Stood out in the line-up and made it such a difficult choice in the challenge against what I found out later to be her brother. She is another one with a bright future. BB & BOS

2nd Donaldson’s Prizelands Sweet Dreams.

Larger built Black & White. Nice head and neck into well laid shoulders, straight front and good depth of brisket. Top line could be better. On the move a little messy fore and aft but good reach and drive in profile

Post
Graduate Bitch (1,0a)

1st. Nicholls-Ward’s Valentisimo's Fauna Para Bumbleridge JW.

2yr Black & White. Top end size wise but balanced and good proportions. Pleasing head, short neck to well-made forequarters with good depth of brisket. Correct rear angles.  Moves well with good reach and drive

Limit Bitch (1,0a)

1st Egginton’s Valentisimo's Adella.

2yr Black & White and carrying a full corded coat.  Well-proportioned head. Well-made front with a bit of fore chest and good deep brisket. Level top line that is disguised by the cords. Lovely rear angles with correct turn of stifle.  This girl excels on the move when run at the correct speed. So true and straight coming and going with a powerful drive in profile

Open Bitch (3,1a)

1st Grief’s Chasjenka Tiggywink of Goldfly.

6yr Black & white. Fully mature B. Top size and good proportions. Pleasing head of good proportions. Longer in neck than some but a lovely front assembly with good fore chest and enough depth of brisket. Good rear & steady on the move but would like to see her moved quicker
